“But we diminish the significance of the media and our reliance on them in everyday life by classifying them as channels of information. Media today are occasions for and conduits of a way of life identified with rationality, technological achievement, and the quest for wealth but also for something else entirely, something we call fun, comfort, convenience, or pleasure.” – Todd Gitlin
I really agree with Mr. Gitlin’s statement. It is especially true with the news. The news is nothing new. There’s very little information left in the newsthat to find anything substantial you actually have to dig. The “news” media plays on our emotions. Stories that make us scared, sad, laugh or say “oOOoOOOo” are real attention grabbers. My mother watches Entertainment Tonight. She isn’t big on it and she doesn’t watch it religiously or anything. I only mention it because that’s the only time I’ve ever seen it. It seems like the people that watch ET care more about other people’s lives then their own. The things celebrities think are more interesting than what they think. People look for pleasure in the news now a days. Who wants to hear about politics or things that actually effect us? Give me Tsunami’s! Earthquakes! Kittens up trees! Genocide! You don’t even hear enough about that… People devour this stuff and move on to next thing. I don’t really care what people read or see. I don’t care if they chose to be ignorant. I don’t care if people see death on TV say “awww” and go make a sandwich. I’m working on myself. One person at a time.

Aww cute puppy. What was I talking about?

Good point, why do people even care about the lives of celebrities. Most of them aren’t even good people and shouldn’t be looked up to. Everyone should take a step back and look at their own life.

Hmmm…I was trying to recall the last time I watched the news when they reported a kitten up a tree or even genocide like you said. Looking back on it, I think I heard about Darfur through a friend. I can’t say I’ve ever read about it in a newspaper.

Sure everyone knows about Darfur. How about Cambodia, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Nepal, Cuba or Chad? Those are all currently happening and that’s just to name a few. But I suppose ones enough for the media.

It’s funny because the general public is most likely the cause for this move toward “soft” news. I think you’re right- people DO care more about celebrities (especially when they’re acting like metaphorical train wrecks) than they do about their own lives. The more “interesting” a story is, the more people tune in, and the higher the ratings are. It just happens that today’s society is more interested in Britney’s latest failure than in… anything else.
